A Personal Look at the Designers of Rosenberry Rooms

Meet Katy Mimari of Caden Lane

Ruffle Blanket - Classic Neutral CollectionIf you ever wondered, as a working mom,  if it is possible to “do it all”, just take a look at Katy Mimari, the designer and owner of Caden Lane.   Katy is not only an incredible designer and business woman, but an amazing inspiration to all working moms.  Aside from being a ton of fun, super smart and talented, and always upbeat, she just exudes this creative energy that is infectious!  Always creating, always designing, always expanding her line and ALWAYS daring to reach in different directions with her style, refusing to be stagnant or safe, Katy is a breath of fresh air.  The risks that Katy takes with Caden Lane designs have proven to be very well received, as our customers are always anxiously waiting to see what is next.  Caden Lane is really a pioneer when it comes to baby and children’s bedding, in that there is NO other designer out there that offers anything similar in style or color, and the wide range of designs within the Caden Lane line is undoubtedly far reaching.  Although the various collections within the Caden Lane designer line represent varying moods, styles and tastes, they share a cohesive element that ties them together.

Sophia Crib BeddingThe first bedding line introduced by Caden Lane is appropriately called the Classic Collection, which is available in blue, pink and neutral colors.  This collection appeals to a more traditional audience with warm tones and classic colors, yet features contemporary elements in the fabric patters.  Next, Caden Lane introduced their Modern Vintage Collection,  which provides a modern feel with an ecclectic edge, and offers a variety of patterns in blue for boys and pink for girls.  The most recent collection introduced by Caden Lane is the Luxe Collection, which offers more vibrant and bold colors to the line, for the mom with a daring sense of style.  It is safe to say that the Caden Lane designer bedding line has “something for everyone”, but Katy didn’t stop there!  As Caden Lane grew as a company, so did their line offering, and shortly thereafter, Caden Lane gave birth to their “big kid” bedding collection.  The Caden Lane juvenile bedding line follows in the footsteps of the baby line, carrying through with similar fabrics and colors, perfectly styled and suited for Lola Diaper Bagyour stylish child, from toddler to teen…so chic, so cool!

But wait, there’s more!   Caden Lane also offers a huge line of diaper bags, with styles ranging from backpacks, to hobos, bowlers, totes and messenger bags.   Let’s not forget the enormous line of accessories that are also part of the Caden Lane line.  These include, blankets, bibs, burp cloths, car seat and shopping cart covers, hooded towels and spillmats.  All of these fantastic and utterly essential baby items are available in all of the Caden Lane fabrics, so you can pick and choose, mix and match and have fun!

Ava Crib Bedding

At this point you are probably wondering, as am I, if Katy ever sleeps!  It is no wonder that many celebrities have chosen Caden Lane for their designer nurseries, including Samantha Harris, Tori Spelling and Brooke Burke, to name a few.

Take a look at the Caden Lane Designer Collection on RosenberryRooms.com, to see the latest and greatest that Caden Lane has to offer….I promise, you won’t be disappointed.

Susie Fougerousse

How would you define the Caden Lane style philosophy?

We strive to create stylish & funky baby necessities, and redefine the norm for nursery décor. The baby’s room should be your FAVORITE room in the house (and it’s the only room you can get away with putting rhinestones on the wall)!

What inspired you to become a designer and start a business?

I was a children’s photographer before I started Caden Lane, and I was always amazed in the LACK of fashionable items for the modern moms. They used to carry around these tacky, quilted, diaper bags that were completely dysfunctional and even more unattractive! I knew there had to be better options out there!

Why did you choose to design baby & children’s products?

I couldn’t find any other profession that would let me work with tulle, rhinestones, textiles, and lace all together!

What is your favorite part of your daily work … when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?

I love seeing the finished nursery! We have a collection of pictures that our customers have sent us to show off their nursery, and it’s always so amazing to see each Caden Lane Classic Red Duvet Coverindividual’s personality come so alive in the baby’s room. You can see the love and dedication on every part of the room.

Do you have any advice for other working moms?

Drink a lot of wine and get a great nanny! Hahaha, just kidding (but not really).  You know, I think for any working mom, the biggest challenge is finding balance between your work and family life. This is what keeps us sane. The best part for me is that when I am with my children, I give them 110% percent, and when I’m at work – it’s about me. For me, that is balance.

If you had to pick a favorite design from your collection, what would it be?

Well, the Cade Bedding set was designed for my son when I couldn’t find any bedding out there that didn’t have a “theme” to it! Then… when I was pregnant with my daughter, I wanted a more “anthropologie” feel to the room. It was my favorite store at the time, and well… sometimes you find inspiration in the strangest places! So the Ava Bedding was created for her, and her room is still my favorite room in the house! Of course, now I love the Ashlyn Bedding from the Luxe Collection. Just can’t decided if it’s worth a whole new pregnancy! Hahaha….

What sets Caden Lane apart from other children’s bedding & accessories designers?

I think we are all unique in our own way. Even though each of our Caden Lane collections are so different, I still feel like the collection flows. It’s funny – some describe us as a modern children’s company, and others think we are simple and sweet. Honestly, I love being in the middle. You can take the most modern of our cribs (like Tori Spelling did) and put any of our bedding on it, or, you can take a sweet traditional sleigh crib (like Samantha Harris did) and compliment it with any of the collections. I think they call it “transitional”? I like to refer to it as “perfect”. 

Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming designs or introductions to your line?

Ummmm, yes!!! We only have a HUGE new accessory collection coming out this December! We’ve added new products to the line like tutu bow holders, hair accessories, paci-clips, closet dividers… and my favorite – Big and Little (brother/sister) shirts! It’s funky, eclectic, and totally Caden Lane! The new bedding will be out in 2010!

Meet Amy Blanchard of AB Designs

I consider myself to be a very lucky girl, in that I am blessed to work with amazing designers and beautiful products every day.  I adore all of the talented artists and designers who are featured on Rosenberry Rooms, and am in awe of their amazing creations.  Every once in a while, though, a designer comes along who really knocks my492-green-crown-picture-frame-with-bright-pink-ribbon socks off.  The kind of designer whose products I can’t stop staring at and thinking about, who inspires awe and renders me somewhat speechless.  A  designer such as this not only warrants tremendous respect, but sparks my own creativity, and leaves me almost short of descriptive words to express their infinite style and class…this designer is Amy Blanchard of AB Designs.

I know I’m in love when i want to use words like droolicious to describe a product line (this is a first, I promise)!   You might think a picture frame is a picture frame, but you ain’t seen nothin’ until you’ve seen an AB Designs picture frame!  Amy Blanchard, the creative designer and owner of AB Designs has redefined the picture frame and transformed an ordinary, every day object into a true piece of art.   What is it that makes AB Designs so phenomenal?  Well, let’s start with the thick, hand painted, lightly rubbed wooden frames which are available in a fantastic palette of irresistible colors.  Add to that, the most gorgeous dupioni silk ribbons available in a 492-green-kellie-picture-frame-with-pink-green-ribbonmyriad of colors, which you can layer for a diverse look.  Last but most certainly not least, each AB Designs picture frame can be adorned with a sparkling brooch in any style or shape to suit your taste, from simple to elegant or whimsical.  For a personal touch you can even choose a covered button in place of a brooch, and have it monogrammed.  The great thing about AB Designs is that it isn’t any one of these components or even the sum of the parts that make these picture frames so special, but the secret ingredient that Amy Blanchard brings to each and every custom and exquisitely made frame.   The quality, workmanship and passion that Amy brings to her designs really transcend each piece.  When you see an AB Designs frame you know it is something special, something extraordinary.

If you are looking for a place worthy of your most precious baby photo, your wedding or anniversary picture, a snap shot of your loved one’s birthday, or even of your favorite pet, there is no place more appropriate than an AB Designs picture frame.  AB Designs encompasses not only a sweet baby and children’s line, but a stylish home line, a classic bridal line and, yes, even an adorable pet line.

Shop the incredible assortment of AB Designs frames on RosenberryRooms.com, or come on by for a visit to see Amy Blanchard’s picture frames in person at our store in 492-white-cross-picture-frame-with-blue-ribbonRaleigh, NC.  If you don’t see the perfect frame to suit your needs, we can custom design one in any size or color, just for you!

Please read Amy Blanchard’s personal interview below to learn more about this incredibly talented artisan.

How would you define the AB Designs style philosophy?
-The AB design philosophy is simple – undeniable high quality using only the best materials available, beautiful color and brooch choices and great customer service!492-pink-chloe-picture-frame-with-khaki-pink-ribbon

What inspired you to become a designer and start a business?
-I never set our to be a designer or business owner.  God had other plans!  My love and passion for photography lead to me doing photography on a professional level, which lead to offering frames for my clients.  I have always loved playing around with beautiful colors and design.  So for fun I started embellishing the frames I bought at market with beautiful ribbon and jewelry pieces.  Word of mouth of what I was doing was instant!  Fast forward 4 years and we are working hard to make AB designs a recognized brand around the world

Why did you choose to design for children’s rooms?
-Children’s rooms are so much fun because it is such a happy time!   A child’s room can be very elegant to fun and whimsical.  The design possibilities are limitless!

What is your favorite part of your daily work … when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?
-I am big on lists!!!  So at the end of the day if I have scratched off every item on my list then I am a happy girl!!  We also hear great stories from our customers on how our492-blue-luna-picture-frame-with-khaki-blue-ribbon frames have made someone happy – that is very rewarding!   It is not just about a frame – it is about a moment!

Do you have any advice for other working moms?
-It is the old cliché – you must love what you do and completely believe in your dream!  Have a support group who loves, understands and believes in you and what you are doing.  Include your children in your business as much as you can.  Our children feel like they are very much a part of what we are doing and get very excited about our growth.

If you had to pick a favorite piece from your collection, what would it be?
-I am in love with our Cheetah and new Zebra ribbon!  Both pieces make such a statement and can be either elegant or whimsical!  We have also been getting in some amazing brooches that are so beautiful and fun to work with.

What sets AB Designs apart from other designers?492-blue-covered-button-picture-frame-with-khaki-ribbon
-I think our customer service, quality and attention to detail sets us apart.  Also, we allow customers to customize their pieces to fit their personal needs.  By offering as many choices as we do make the design possibilities endless!

Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming designs or introductions to your line?
-We have slowly been introducing our new lamps.  Customers will be able to choose ribbon and brooches to embellish lampshades.  We are very excited about our Lamps 492-brown-luna-picture-frame-with-pink-brown-ribbonand have already been getting orders for them.  Response has been great!  As far as frames, we will continue to add ribbon selections that follow the trends in home décor and brooches that are unmatched.  We are also adding more frames with smaller brooches on the corners and larger portrait frames.  I offered the larger portrait frames to my photography clients but we have just started to include them in the AB designs’ line.

Meet Cinda Brown of Maddie Boo

It is such a pleasure to introduce our readers and customers to Cinda Brown, the designer and owner of Maddie Boo Bedding, and a “true trendsetter in the juvenile industry”.  When it comes to baby and children’s bedding, the name Maddie Boo is synonymous with quality, style and practical luxury. Maddie Boo has been creating Bella Crib Beddingunique and irresistible crib bedding sets and kid’s bedding designs for many years, and has earned an enormous following of adoring parents and celebrities, including Courtney Cox, Heidi Klum, Benjamin Bratt, Dylan McDermott, and Liv Tyler, to name a few.  It is no surprise that Maddie Boo has attracted so much attention, as Cinda Brown, an interior designer by trade, brings an acute aesthetic style to each collection, fusing fashion with function in her nursery and children’s bedding designs.

The Maddie Boo designer bedding line has such a wide range of products and styles available, there is truly “something for everyone”.  From bright, bold & modern, to classic & preppy and soft, subtle & neutral, Cinda manages to cover all of the bases with her bedding collections.  In addition, if you fall in love with a design, and can’t get enough of it, you can start with the moses basket or bassinet, then graduate to the crib and twin sets.  All of Cinda’s designs can be made in any format, which is also a brilliant way to coordinate the room, when big brother or sister is sharing with the baby.  Cinda’s design training and love of textiles is apparent with every design, lovingly created and perfectly made for your little one.  Although you Rickie Crib Beddingcan buy any one of her gorgeous predesigned sets,  Maddie Boo will also create a custom bedding set, to suit the most particular of tastes.   I must also mention that matching window treatments, blankets, bibs, burp clothes and high chair covers are available, too.  What hasn’t Cinda thought of??

I hope you enjoy learning more about Cinda Brown of Maddie Boo Bedding by reading her personal interview below.  You can also browse the Maddie Boo designer collection at RosenberryRooms.com to see all Maddie Boo has to offer!

Susie Fougerousse

How would you define the Maddie Boo style philosophy?

Our design philosophy at Maddie Boo is function and practicality infused with aesthetics.  We want our bedding and products to be “mom friendly” but also be stylish Amanda Beddingand fashionable.

What inspired you to become a designer and start a business?

I had my own interior design business.  I realized I was continually hired to do nurseries and children’s spaces.  I found there were not a lot of choices out there for parent’s buying retail.  I wanted parent’s to have “designer” options for their babies and children without hiring the designer.

Why did you choose to design for children’s rooms?

I love designing for children!   I remember doing my first nursery for my baby and how special that was.  I still feel that way every time I design a new crib collection for our line.   It is so much more fun, rewarding and inspiring  to design for children’s spaces than picking out kitchen tile or hardware for the bath.

What is your favorite part of your daily work … when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?

My favorite part of my daily work is creating.  I am happiest when I have new inspiration to work from.  When I look back at the end of the day I feel most accomplished Jackson Beddingwhen I have actually created, tweeked and finished a design   I can hardly wait to “show and tell”  in the office to our staff.

Do you have any advice for other working moms?

Be organized!  But take the time to enjoy your family.  It goes so fast.  My oldest is going to college next year and I have been daily reminded how fast these 18 years have gone.  Learn to let the little things go.  Say no to the things you don’t have a passion for so you can have the time to say yes to the things you have a burning desire for.

If you had to pick a favorite design from your collection, what would it be?

Picking a favorite design from our collection is too hard- each one has a special quality and memory for me.

What sets Maddie Boo apart from other children’s bedding designers?

I feel like we are different at Maddie Boo cause we offer so many different looks, variety  and designs.  We aren’t just traditional, transitional or contemporary.  We offer a look for every home and every taste.

I know you have worked on some great celebrity nurseries!   What is your most memorable nursery design?

One of my most memorable celebrity nurseries was Dylan McDermott’s baby girl- Charlotte Rose.  What a sweet, beautiful baby she was.  The nursery had been his Lucy Beddingoffice.  It was fun to watch Dylan’s face as we transformed the space from his masculine office to a sweet, fairytale room for his new baby.

Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming designs or introductions to your line?

We are so excited about our new mix and match line.  We are working on a new textile collection where all our bedding pieces can mix and match.  Parents will be able to create a custom look by mixing and matching the various pieces to create their own look.  I can’t wait to bring it to life and show it all off!

Meet Basia Duenckel of NollieCovers

Every parent who has paid a visit to the store to purchase a car seat for their new baby on the way or for their growing toddler, has experienced the disappointment that comes along with, not only the lack of selection available overall, but the sheer void of any high end or stylish fabrics used.  This is where Nollie Covers replacement car seat covers come to the rescue!  NollieCovers, owned and operated by designer Basia Duenckel, creates beautiful, high quality, and nothing short of luxurious 461-infant-car-seat-cover-in-baby-molly2replacement covers for all of the main car seat brands, including Britax, Peg Perego and Graco.  What sets Nollie Covers apart from other designers is that unlike the typical thin “slip cover style” covers, these are custom made replacement covers that are designed to fit each car seat size and shape perfectly, include all of the appropriate padding and fully replace the old cover.  Using only the finest hand selected fabrics, including chenille, velvet, minky and sweet cotton prints, the final product is a cozy, highly cushioned car seat cover with fully lined canopy and double-stitched seams for durability.  Of course, Basia creates each Nollie Cover with a child’s safety, and comfort in mind, and each replacement car seat cover is machine washable and dryer safe, to make cleaning a cinch.   In addition, Nollie Covers are all hand crafted in the USA, using the highest quality workmanship and attention to detail … you can’t beat that!

Nollie Covers has an enormous fan base including celebrities, sports figures and royalty, but the most meaningful and impressive accolades come from moms and dads around the country (and world) who can’t help but gush over Basia’s incredible designs.  Parents just don’t like Nollie Covers, they adore them, so much so that Basia regularly receives emails of thanks from happy parents who are more than eager to express their awe and appreciation for her amazing product.  When a new mom or dad first glances at their Nollie Cover replacement car seat cover, the typical response (after they lift their jaw up from the floor) goes something like this – it’s perfect, gorgeous, amazing, beautiful, ultra soft and padded, and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT!461-infant-car-seat-cover-in-baby-perry10

So, give your car seat a makeover today!  Remove the factory issued blue or black fabric car seat cover and replace it with a chic NollieCover!   Choose from a dizzying variety of colors and designs, including new organic cotton fabrics, and you can even monogram it for a personal touch.    I am so thrilled to be offering the amazing Nollie Covers designer line on RosenberryRooms.com and I hope you enjoy learning more about Basia by reading her personal interview.

How would you define the NollieCovers style philosophy?
I try to design things that don’t just make one person happy, but that will appeal to a wide variety of customers.  From very girly, to extreme.  I don’t have a particular style…they always change…I love lots of different looks and colors, and am very spontaneous at putting combos of them together.  Baby’s comfort, and Mother’s pleasure to look at – that’s my core philosophy.  It’s all about the baby.

What inspired you to become a designer and start a business?
No planning went into it.  Out of six children, my last was a daughter.  All of the car seats at that time were navy blue, black, and gray – nothing I wanted my first daughter sitting in.  Plus, they were very stiff and uncomfortable.  I started NollieCovers to change this…and as you can see, the whole market has changed because of it.  Five years461-infant-car-seat-cover-in-baby-patti-cake ago, two-tone girly covers did not exist!

What is your favorite part of your daily work … when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?
When I receive letters and phone calls from parents raving about how happy they are with the quality of our product, and how relaxed and comfy their babies are in their NollieCovers.

Do you have any advice for other working moms?
Don’t be afraid to follow the passion you have in doing something you love…focus on what you love…not the money.  Do something you’re passionate about, and the money will follow.  Also, don’t overplan or overspend when setting up a small business!  Start out small…make the highest quality product you can…and word of mouth will go a long way.

If you had to pick a favorite design from your collection, what would it be?
That’s like asking a Mom which of her children is her favorite…I love them all!  If I had to pick, though, it would be our Paris cover/line.  That was the cover that really launched us into the industry.

What sets NollieCovers apart from other designers?
Our unique fabrics for one thing.  Our covers were the very first two-toned covers on the market…using unique high-end cottons and furs.  NollieCovers are replacement covers – not thin fabric slipcovers.  Plus, every NollieCover is custom hand-made to order for each client in the USA.
We also make replacement covers for the widest range of car seats on the market (and Bugaboo and Orbit Stroller Covers, too) – including the whole Britax line, Orbit Infant, Maxi-Cosi, Chicco, Peg Perego Primo Viaggio SIP 30/30, etc. etc. – and each and every one of them is made to the exact original manufacturer’s specifications.  No 461-toddler-car-seat-cover-in-nolan2one else does that.

Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming designs or introductions to your line?
NollieCovers will be introducing a fully Organic line of replacement car seat covers, blankets, stroller covers, and accessories.  This line is scheduled to launch in Fall/Winter 2009/2010.   We’re also introducing a line of heirloom-quality handmade quilts.

Meet Reesa Qualia of Renditions by Reesa

I am so pleased to be introducing our readers and customers to Reesa Qualia, the wonderfully talented artist that creates all of the artwork for the Renditions by Reesa children’s artwork line.  A true pioneer in the children’s art industry, Reesa was also one of the first artists  featured on Rosenberry Rooms, and remains at the top of the list of our most popular artists!   Reesa’s art is unique not only in style, but also in the fact that every piece is hand painted, giving each an original look and feel.  In addition, Reesa’s art touches on all of the popular children’s themes, while covering all of the classic and current color and style trends, providing an amazing selection of art for suitable for any child’s room.  Whether it’s a modern bird, a basketball, a cowboy or a bunny in a field, all Renditions by Reesa designs (though varied), remain true to her core style, making each piece a distinctive Renditions by Reesa creation.

Reesa has consistently built upon her line of artwork by adding great coordinating pieces such as growth charts, wall hangings, framed art and wall plaques, among others, allowing for a fantastic assortment of coordinating choices within her collections.  Reesa is constantly creating and adding to the Renditions by Reesa collection, at a tireless pace.  Every year Reesa’s collection grows immensely, keeping us on the edge of our seats waiting to see what’s next, and we are never disappointed.   Our customers love Renditions by Reesa, and so does everyone here at Rosenberry Rooms!  I hope you enjoy learning more about Reesa in her interview below.

Susie Fougerousse

How would you define the Renditions by Reesa artwork style?

Classical with a touch of whimsy

What inspired you to become an artist and start a business?

I have always been interested in art since a young age.  By the time I was in high school, I knew I would study art in college.  I was painting custom art and murals at the age of 28 when I decided to start Renditions by Reesa.

Why did you choose to design for children’s rooms?

At the time there was not much art available to buy to decorate a child’s room- you could only find what was done by a local artist.  I painted a lot of murals because people couldn’t find art to buy.  I painted the same murals over and over, so I decided to come up with a way to reproduce my art on canvas and make it available to a larger group of people.  I was the first in the kids business to come up with the idea to have my originals reproduced on canvas.  Only posters and prints were available at the time.

What is your favorite part of your daily work … when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?

Getting an email from someone telling me how much they love the art and how it has completed their child’s room.  I love it when they send photos of the room!

Do you have any advice for other working moms?

You must learn to set aside time for your family.  Whatever is going on, you must forget about it and dedicate that time to your family. When you own your own business there is always something that needs to be done.  It took me a few years to realize that I will never be caught up at work.  You do what must be done and have certain days or hours of the day that you set aside for your family.

If you had to pick a favorite piece from your collection, what would it be?

The Snuggly Bunny, Snuggly Puppy and Snuggly Duck set

What sets the Renditions by Reesa art apart from other children’s art?

Definitely our quality sets us apart.  Our designs are hand painted by a talented team of artists in Sri Lanka.  Most of the other canvases available are prints on canvas.  When you feel the texture and brush strokes, you know it is something unique and hand made.

Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming designs or introductions to your line?

We are so excited about our new Imagination Squares.  I am just beginning to show them this summer and they will be available in September.  They are a grouping of 12”x12” canvases.  The customer can mix and match their own grouping of colors and designs to create their own unique collection of art.  You might hang 2 or maybe even 12 together as a set to complete your room.

Meet Christine Senkiewicz of Doodlefish

I recently wrote about Regina Nouvel, “the artist half” of the Doodlefish duo, and now I am pleased to be writing about Christine Senkiewicz, the bedding designer who makes up the other half of this successful team.  Christine designs all of the bedding, window treatments, and coordinating accessories for the Doodlefish designer bedding and décor line.  Doodlefish is such a unique and incredible company because it brings together two very successful and talented women who work together in perfect cohesiveness to create a whole room look for your nursery or child’s room.

Christine has impeccable taste and a great style that is almost hard to put your finger on.  I love the fact that you can’t really “label” her style, as I think that is a real asset to her line.  Is it whimsical, sophisticated, classic, cottage, modern, playful or elegant?  Yes, it is all of these things and more.  Christine manages to offer the theme room look, without being over the top and or “too cliché” as she mentions.  So, yes you can do an airplane, western or ballerina themed room, and create a fun and imaginative environment for your child, that is in keeping with the overall style and aesthetic of your home. Doodlefish designs enable parents to decorate tastefully with high end, exquisite linens and coordinating room décor, which is still down to earth and fun for kids.  As a customer, you also have the freedom to include embroidered panels on the crib bumpers if you are leaning towards a more thematic look, or if you are looking for a versatile and understated look, you can opt not to include them.

Aside from the great look and feel of the Doodlefish line of bedding and décor, as Christine points out in her interview, the quality is second to none.  The superior fabrics used and the quality workmanship make the final product outstanding.  Doodlefish offers an extensive collection of pre-designed sets, but Christine is also able to custom design anything…the sky’s the limit.   So, have fun, and liven up your child’sDoodlefish Regal Glider by Little Castle - Loose Cushion space with a Doodlefish design!

Susie Fougerousse

How would you define the Doodlefish style philosophy?
Doodlefish is a warm combination of cottage and modern styles with a whimsical twist.  We design our juvenile and infant products with the entire home in mind.  Our theory is each room in the home should be a contribution to the entire home’s style and aesthetic.  Our style follows today’s color and style trends without being too trendy, too traditional or too cliché baby and kids.  Our style walks that thin line of traditional longevity and current trend appeal.  We want a child’s room to bring joy to Mom, Dad and most important the child.

What inspired you to become a designer and start a business?
That is a good question…I didn’t intend to be a designer or start a business – that is the funny part.  I taught myself embroidery and digitizing as a hobby when I left a corporate marketing job when I had my son Andrew.  Then I started doing small projects for a local boutique and it just evolved naturally.  I started with embroidering monograms, then embroidering Regina Nouvel’s characters on crib bedding and before I knew it I was in the bedding business with a great friend and business partner.  Regina is the artist that creates all Doodlefish characters and artwork.

Why did you choose to design for children’s rooms?
Childrens’ rooms are fun — there isn’t a more joyful room in the house!    Children’s’ rooms allow you total design freedom and encourage imaginative and creative designs. Where else can you have fuzzy purple fabric, smiling turtles, rhinestones, ballerina butterflies and dogs flying airplanes?

What is your favorite part of your daily work … when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?
My favorite part is designing a nursery or child’s room.  People are always in a great mood when they are designing their child’s room – and why not – it’s fun!   Nurseries are extra fun because the new parents and grandparents are so excited and happy.

Do you have any advice for other working moms?
Yes, and it is the same advice I give myself when things get crazy.
“Take the time to enjoy your child – take a break when they need you – enjoy the day to day things in life”.  After all, no one ever reached the age of 80 and said with regret that they wished they had worked more.

If you had to pick a favorite design from your collection, what would it be?
My favorite is the Rose Garden Crib set.  I love the balance of the modern floral print with the ruffled crib skirt and polka dot sheet and ties.  It just makes me smile.

What sets Doodlefish apart from other children’s bedding and decor designers?
Our quality – hands down!  We work very hard to offer quality at an affordable price.  We offer lined skirts with longer skirt drops, window treatments and customization – after all, sometimes you just need it your way.  Also, we use premium grade fabrics – unlike other manufacturers who use sheeting material that can wear quickly and wrinkle.  Second, our customer service, I can proudly say that we have never missed a deadline or disappointed a customer that needed something a certain way or by a certain time.

Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming designs or introductions to your line?

Of course – there is always something exciting going on!  This summer we will be introducing a quilted comforter option for our juvenile bedding designs.    Also, look for new designs too!

Meet Regina Nouvel of Doodlefish

This week turns out to be the perfect time to introduce our customers to the fabulous Regina Nouvel of Doodlefish. Since May is the month for mothers, it is my pleasure to write about Regina, who is not only a wonderfully talented and successful artist, but a loving mother of two. And, I must mention, that Rosenberry Rooms is offering an exclusive sale this May on the entire Doodlefish Art Collection…so now is a great time to buy the adorable artwork you have been admiring for so long!

Doodlefish is a fascinating and inspiring company, in that Regina creates beautiful and whimsical artwork in collaboration with Christine Senkiewicz, who designs top of the line bedding and together they offer the complete room look. Decorating for children has never been so easy with all of the coordinating pieces available in the Doodlefish designer line. If you fall in love with one of Regina’s art pieces, you can pick up the bedding and coordinating custom glider to accompany the artwork, and voila, you have the perfect nursery or big kid’s room. On the flip side, the extensive Doodlefish artwork collection is so versatile that any piece can easily coordinate with your existing décor or color scheme. If you already have your furniture and bedding, you can simply accessorize by adding a grouping of Doodlefish artwork as the finishing touch.

Touching on popular children’s themes and current color trends, along with tried and true classics, the Doodlefish artwork line has something for every child’s room. With great boys’ themes, such as transportation, sports, safari animals, aviation, critters or by the sea and sweet girls themes such as, flowers, fairies, ballerinas, princesses, tea parties, and cuddly animals, it’s not hard to find exactly what you are looking for. In addition to the selection of wonderful themed artwork, Doodlefish offers seemingly endless options for size, matte colors, frame choices and personalization. Within each collection you can choose to purchase a few small pieces, one or two larger pieces or if you have the space, you can go all out and get a dozen coordinating pieces in varying shapes and sizes to fill your walls.

The Doodlefish art collection is colorful, whimsical and too cute for words. What I really love is the fact that the Doodlefish line is very up beat and happy, and it transitions very well from nursery to child’s room. Regina has an incredible eye for color and her talent for creating warm, inviting and best of all, FUN artwork is second to none. It’s no wonder why moms everywhere fall in love with Doodlefish at first sight.

I loved reading Regina’s personal interview, and as it turns out we have many things in common, not the least of which is our love for french fries. During all four of my pregnancies I consumed so many fries that I fear my children are part potato. I have had the pleasure of working with Regina for many years, and she and Christine have always been a great inspiration to me. I hope you enjoy learning more about what inspires Regina, and what makes the Doodlefish designer line so unique.

Susie Fougerousse

How would you define the Doodlefish artwork style?

Most of the artwork is what I would describe as whimsical.  I have done all kinds of artwork, but gravitate towards happy creatures…smiling bugs, frogs and turtles and of course, dogs.

What inspired you to become an artist and start a business?

My mom is an artist and my father is an engineer/mathematician.  I am somewhat of a split brain.  My artistic passion has always been drawing.  I went to Georgia Tech originally to study architecture because it was a good mix of art and science.  In the end, I graduated with a degree in Industrial Management and went to work for several fortune 500 companies as a software engineer.  I have always loved antiques and specifically architectural salvage.  Around the time my daughter was born, I rented a space at a local antique mall and started painting on found objects like vintage tin ceiling tiles.  Eventually I started selling my artwork to several local stores and galleries.  After a few years of working full time, parenting and painting, I decided to stay home with my daughter and baby son and just paint on the side.  The number of stores grew to a point that I could no longer keep up and my giclee business began.  I met Christine about 5 years into my artwork business and we decided to team up to create one-of-a-kind embroidery designs.  This grew and became what is today Doodlefish Artwork and Bedding.

Why did you choose to design for children’s rooms?

I love to make children smile….there is nothing like a happy child!  I don’t understand children’s rooms decorated with adult items.  They are young for such a short period of time I think it is important for them to have a space that is fun, whimsical and stress free!

What is your favorite part of your daily work … when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?

I love the design process. Unfortunately, running a successful business, regardless of the product, is not always glamorous.  I guess the most rewarding part for me is how what I do sets an example for my own family.  My children know that I work hard, but because I own my own business, I have the flexibility to be there for them and watch them grow up.  For my daughter, she sees that someday, she too can have it all.

Do you have any advice for other working moms?

I have to remind myself that most of the expectations that I think I have failed, are my own.  Children are full of unconditional love and their standards are much lower than your own.  I try to remember what life was like when I was a child and encourage the same simple childhood for my kids.  The explosion of media has caused us all to be nervous about everything.  My kids love it when I have to work late because usually that means Mac and Cheese in front of the TV…I am the only one that feels guilty…they are in heaven!

If you had to pick a favorite design from your collection, what would it be?

My two favorite pieces are Whale of a Tale and Princess Frog.  I designed these pieces for the children of my favorite charitable organization – My House.  My House is a home for medically fragile children under the age of 5.  In most cases, the children have been abused.  They are well enough to be released from the hospital, but because of the continued care they require, cannot be sent home or placed.  Without places like My House, these children would remain hospitalized with nowhere to go.  My House provides a home like environment with around the clock care and most of all love.  I created these two pieces of artwork to go in the children’s rooms over their beds.  Because there are a lot of volunteers, having their names above the bed, allows the volunteer to say the child’s name when they enter the room.  The children can take the piece with them when they go home as a memory of the love and care they received at My House.  I decided to add the pieces to the line and donate proceeds from the sale of each piece to My House.  If you would like more information, please visit www.myhouseweb.org.

What sets the Doodlefish artwork collection apart from other children’s art?

Besides our smiling happy characters and amazing quality, Doodlefish Art offers a lot of versatility to match any décor.  We offer different background choices, frame choices and personalization.  I personally create the originals that are used in the printing process.  I also offer commissioned pieces if we do not have something that will work or if a customer is looking for a one-of-a-kind original.

Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming designs or introductions to your line?

We have some exciting things planned this year to coincide with the introduction of our new Doodlefish Designer for custom bedding…stay tuned.

Meet Charn Pennewaert of Charn & Company

I am so excited today to be writing about an outstanding lighting designer (and one of my personal favorites), Charn Pennewaert of Charn & Company. If you have had the pleasure of seeing the Charn & Company custom lighting and décor line, you can easily see that Charn is one of the most creative and talented designers in the children’s furnishings industry today. Pairing amazing fabrics from well known children’s linen designers such as Pixie Dust Décor, Maddie Boo, Caden Lane and Elizabeth Allen with custom paint colors and exclusive lighting designs makes Charn & Company stand out above the rest. Although there are endless options available, Charn manages to make the design process easy by offering great coordinating fabrics and colors, while giving creative freedom to our customers to add appliqués, choose trims and select custom finishes. How incredible it is to be able to custom design the lighting for your child’s room with the click of a button, and to own a one of a kind designer chandelier, sconce, nightlight or lamp! In addition to the hand painted finishes and fabric selection available, the shapes and designs of each chandelier, wall sconce, lamp base and shade are incredibly stylish and beautiful, resulting in a truly unique look.

What really strikes me about Charn’s designer lighting line is that somehow the shapes and silhouettes can be appropriate for both boys and girls, depending on the colors and patterns selected. Many lines have very distinct feminine and masculine products, with flowers and crystals for girls and sports or transportation themes for boys, whereas Charn’s lighting has an inherent versatility and fluidity allowing for a broader appeal. Although Charn & Company is widely recognized for its cottage style, the new ceiling pendants (available in many shapes and sizes) are so sleek and modern, adding an entirely new dimension to the line. I adore Charn’s new multi tiered ceiling pendants because the range of looks available is limitless, and again, they are fabulous for both boys and girls rooms. For a clean and classic look, choose a solid fabric with contrasting solid trim in a traditional round shape or for a bold statement, choose a great modern print in a hexagon or square shape.

Charn doesn’t stop with designing custom lighting; she has branched out into the home accessories and décor realm with her stunning shabby chic Bella line. This incredibly sweet and feminine line is perfect for the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen or office, featuring everything from mirrors, wastebaskets, tissue box covers and stepstools all embellished with floral appliqués and, of course, available in three gorgeous shabby colors: white, cream and pink.

It is my pleasure to share the Charn & Company designer line with our customers, but especially to introduce the artistic founder and owner, Charn Pennewaert. Just as Charn’s parents were a creative inspiration to her, she is an inspiration to us … encouraging us to think outside the box when it comes to decorating and sparking unlimited creativity in the design process.

Susie Fougerousse

How would you define the Charn & Company style philosophy?

Charn & Company’s style is classic and unique. When designing our products, we strive for a classy style. We’re not about copying other products because it is the trend. We want to be the leader of today’s style. Creating your own look is what makes our products unique. Quality is important to us. If is not made well, we won’t put our name on it. We want our customers to be absolutely satisfied with our product. It has to be love at first sight and a long love affair after that.

What inspired you to become a designer and start a business?

My parents inspired me to be creative and be innovative. At an early age, it was all about fabrics, colored pencils, and paper. What could I create with all that I had around me? Seeing my parents make custom furniture and custom lighting (which the lampshade styles still exist today) made me feel the thrill of wanting to start my own business. Fresh out of college, I knew it was time to put my name on something that no one had thought of before – custom lighting for children’s rooms was born.

Why did you choose to design for children’s rooms?

Having four children of my own, it was easy to think of all lighting for children. Every child has his unique style and through their precious years, it is important to inspire their own style and space.

What is your favorite part of your daily work … when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?

The best part of the day is personally answering my customer’s questions and comments. Helping excited customers create their custom chandelier or lamp with fabric advice and finish colors.

Do you have any advice for other working moms?

Today’s moms have a tough job – balancing their children and work. Balance is the key. Make sure your children are first on the list and then comes work.

If you had to pick a favorite design from your collection, what would it be?

That’s a hard question….but if I had to pick, our chandeliers are very unique and cool looking. They are not over the top and just look really stunning with the right color and fabric. I have my wooden chandeliers in every room of my home.

What sets Charn & Company apart from other children’s lighting designers?

We are all about custom – custom colors, your choice of fabrics, and style. We make to order and because each product is custom, we make sure it is done right.

Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming designs or introductions to your line?

We have just introduced the New Caden Lane Lighting Collections featuring cool pendant shapes in multi levels. The modern patterns and bright colors are just ideal for our modern pendants. This collection will be available in mid April 2009.

Meet Karen Capp of Oopsy Daisy Fine Art for Kids

The reasons why the Oopsy Daisy Fine Art For Kids brand has become a household name are almost too countless to name. With well over a thousand unique pieces of art from 55 accomplished artists, and a broad product offering extending beyond the giclee print on canvas, including clocks, lighting, rugs, growth charts, placemats, jewelry and clothing, Oopsy Daisy Fine Art For Kids is widely known as the leading manufacturer of children’s artwork today. Last, but certainly not least, the fundamental reason why Oopsy Daisy is the most prominent presence in the children’s art industry is due to the talents of its owner and founder, Karen Capp.

Karen Capp and her husband Tom founded Oopsy Daisy back in 1999. While searching for artwork for their own children’s rooms, they discovered a huge void in the marketplace for fine art for kids. One of Karen’s goals, along with providing beautiful and inspiring artwork, is to instill an appreciation of art in children at an early age. For this reason, Oopsy Daisy includes a brief biography of each artist along with every painting. As a company, they have evolved over the years to offer so many complementary products making decorating a cinch. If you just adore a particular painting, you can now find the matching lamp and nightlight, or rug etc. In addition, most paintings are part of a larger collection so that you can easily pull together the whole look. Depending on space, you can buy just one or two paintings or you can opt to buy as many as ten and hang them in groupings. A few great examples of some of these vast collections are the incredible animal paintings by Meghann O’Hara (it’s almost impossible to buy just one because they are all so darn cute) and the vintage sports series by Aaron Christensen.

I distinctly remember the first time I saw the Oopsy Daisy collection in person, and the sheer glee that I felt as I stared at each painting. Never before had I been so enthralled by children’s artwork and I actually felt a little star struck when I met Karen, the genius behind it all! Even now, years later, every time Karen introduces pieces from new and existing artists, I get a tingle in my toes from the excitement. I find myself thinking, I MUST find a place in my house to put some of this new art! Since I have already covered every bit of wall space in each of my kids’ rooms, I need to live vicariously through our customers as they purchase the new designs.

Something that most people don’t know about Karen, is that she is not only bringing together all of these incredible artists and compiling their work into a collection, but she is a very integral part of the creative process that goes into making each painting. She is choosing colors, suggesting themes, concepts and ideas and really is the driving force behind the designs in most cases. She has such a keen sense of what it takes to make an inspiring and appealing piece of children’s art, and a true understanding for what parents and children are looking for.

When I was decorating my children’s rooms, I had such fun searching through each artist’s collection and finding just the right pieces to suit their personalities. I loved seeing their reactions as we hung the artwork, and continue to enjoy seeing them discover new elements in each painting.

Day at the Bay Canvas Reproduction by Jill McDonald and Our World Mural Banner by Donna Ingemanson hang in my three year old Sebastien’s room. Sebastien loves to point out the various animals on his map, and we usually end up having a brief conversation about them before his afternoon nap.

My seven year old daughter Genevieve is a vivacious child with an incredible imagination. She loves to draw pictures and dream up fantastic stories. For her I chose many bright and colorful pieces from Jill McDonald’s fairy series. When she was three we bought her the Once Upon A Time Canvas Reproduction and it was a great source of fun for her every night to talk about what all of the fairies were doing and which one she happened to like best that day. Later, we added the Fairy Triptych made up of Morning Fairies Canvas Reproduction, Afternoon Fairies Canvas Reproduction and Nighttime Fairies Canvas Reproduction which provide even more entertainment for Genevieve.

I let Gabrielle, who is eleven, choose her favorite pieces when we transitioned to a more mature room design last year. She loves blue and chose several paintings by Gail Kaseguma. We hung Flower Tree, Gumball Tree, Orange Tree and Butterfly Tree all in a row on one wall and the lager Spring Jazz Panoramic Canvas Reproduction on the other. I love that the colors are both soothing and vibrant at the same time, and the designs are playful and sweet.

I am now in the process of finishing Cosette’s nursery. She is approaching three months, and I have been dragging my feet because I almost can’t bare to choose between all of the amazing options in the Oopsy Daisy collection. I have a case of designer’s block and may have to solicit Karen’s expert help with this!

I have long been in awe of Karen Capp and totally in love with the Oopsy Daisy Fine Art For Kids collection, so I am thrilled to be sharing this personal interview with you today. Karen gives 110% in all that she does and it is that effort mixed with a wonderful natural talent that makes Oopsy Daisy one of a kind.

Sincerely,
Susie Fougerousse

What inspired you to start a children’s art business?
karen-capp4
Like many owners of kid related businesses, our first child was our inspiration! While decorating his nursery, my husband and I found we couldn’t find art that seemed more current and pertinent. We wanted fresh and fun, but with a real art feel. Tom (my husband) comes from a family of artists and his mother was our first artist. We started this business together (and yes, we still love working together) and at our first trade show in Atlanta we featured just three artists. Now, ten years later, our business family has grown to encompass more than 80 artists, all with different styles, yet each shares a sense of play and color that makes our line feel cohesive and unified.

Oopsy Daisy carries such a wonderful assortment of art from many different artists. How would you describe the Oopsy Daisy style philosophy?
We look for art that will engage the child, and at the same time art that will flow with the design style of the rest of the home. We live in Southern California where home prices tend to be astronomical, so homes are small and we wanted our kids’ rooms to be tasteful in the same way that our family room or living room was. We really believe that children respond to interesting, well-crafted artwork and color choices. Both my son and daughter interacted with the art we hung on their walls, with no prompting from us. When she was four, she made up names for all the fairies in Jill McDonald’s “Forest Fairies” and made me repeat them correctly each night at bedtime so that kind of backfired on me when I was tired and couldn’t remember…

Also, it is important that an artist put something of themselves and their soul into a piece- that is what makes it special and significant. When Jennifer Mercede started to work on “Together- Animal Kingdom”, I told her to have fun with it. She puts text in many of her pieces and if you look closely at the piece, one of the lines says “have fun! She instructed.” When you look at that incredible piece of wild animals and crazy color, you know Jennifer had a fabulous time with her brush and her paints!

We know you have great taste in artwork. Does this come from an educational background in art? Are you artistic?
I am not an artist but I have (if I do say so myself) a definite sense of color and what works for us. Some of the artists I work with have paid me a great compliment in saying that they find me a very good art director. I don’t have an educational background in art- in fact, before starting Oopsy daisy, Fine Art For Kids, I worked in television news as a reporter/anchor. Go figure… you just never know where life will take you. My mother instilled in my sister and me, a great appreciation for the arts and we grew up going to museums, theater and traveling a lot too as we lived overseas most of our childhood. I like to think that some of that global interest, in cultures and art styles, is reflected in our line too.

What is your favorite part of your daily work … when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding? Every time a new piece of art is finished, it’s like Christmas for me. I really love working with our artists from the beginning on the concept, colors and sketches- then seeing their final magic. I have to say too, when I am in our studio facility and I see personalized artwork lined up, getting ready for packing and shipping, I can see all the bedrooms the paintings are heading to. Knowing our pieces end up in real kids’ spaces all over the world is a big reward. One time we were house hunting and we went into a home with our realtor and there in the nursery was “Animal Alphabet” by one of our long-time artists, Maria Carluccio. It made us giggle- we sometimes can’t believe we started something from our garage that has now become so much bigger than just ourselves. We are particularly proud of producing the vast majority of our products in the USA. We now employ 35 people in our San Diego facilities and it is important to us as parents and Americans that we are creating opportunity in our country.

Do you have any advice for other working moms?
Well, help your friends whenever you can and they will help you. I couldn’t achieve any kind of balance in my life if it weren’t for my neighborhood friends and our efforts to carpool and schedule together. It is really hard to say “take time for yourself” because that really feels unachievable some days, so just do the best you can. I also think it always helps to remind yourself, “is this a big problem or a little problem” and just focus on tackling one thing at a time. I am constantly reprioritizing my list so I feel like I have a handle on things.

If you had to pick a favorite piece from the Oopsy Daisy collection, what would it be?
I can’t pick between my children, our artists or our artwork. Way too many things to love about all of them!

What sets the Oopsy Daisy art collection apart from other children’s art?
I would have to say both the breadth and depth of our line- we have more than eighty artists and some of those artists have 30 or more pieces in their collection so the options are just huge. At the same time, quality, quality, quality. Our artists are professionals and their education and experience show in the pieces they create for us. Customer service is another thing that we really care about- will this piece of artwork match your fabric, did the gift arrive in time for the birthday. Our service team cares a lot and I believe it shows. Lastly, joy! When people come into our trade show booth and see all the art together, it is a happy place- just like what you would want for your child’s room.

Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming designs or introductions to your line?
We never stop introducing new pieces- this week in fact we are releasing more than 60 new pieces of artwork to the line. We also very recently introduced table top lamps with decorative art shades and pull charms, wool rugs, jewelry for girls, canvas clocks and infant pant & tee sets. Whew, that was a busy 6 months! We are also introducing new gift packaging for our night lights this April, with gift packaging for growth charts and jewelry to follow.

Meet Jamie Lentzner of Jamie’s Painting & Design

I used to think I was a seasoned multi-tasker, until I met Jamie Lentzner (the Jamie from Jamie’s Painting & Design). I was particularly proud of my multi tasking skills a few weeks ago when I sat on the couch nursing my newborn baby in my lap, while feeding a hot dog to my 3 year old son (seated to my left) and helping my 11 year old (seated to my right) with her home work assignment by researching the civil war on my laptop, while simultaneously exchanging instant messages with my office manager. At that moment my head swelled a little and I thought “darn I’m good”. Well, I can safely say that my abilities pale in comparison to those of Jamie Lentzner. When Jamie isn’t involved in some sort of charitable function, volunteering at her children’s school by taking on a huge art project, running her business, taking care of her kids or blogging, she is designing and creating more and more and even more designs for her ever popular line of children’s art.

Aside from the fact that Jamie is super talented and has a knack for creating children’s artwork that really strikes a chord with our customers, the sheer depth and breadth of the Jamie’s Painting & Design collection is enough to garner anyone’s respect. Jamie has managed to cover every hot color scheme and every popular children’s theme in the most sought after children’s products: birth certificate plaques, personalized name plaques, initial tiles, personalized plates and Christmas ornaments. What really sets Jamie’s products apart from those of other artists is her unique drawing style along with the medium she has chosen for her artwork. Jamie’s Painting & Design specializes in artwork on a tile surface, which is brilliant because the artwork can never fade, always maintains its beautiful glossy surface and best of all it can easily be stored and then passed down from generation to generation.

Three years ago when I gave birth to my son Sebastien, Jamie sent me one of her signature Birth Certificate Plaques as a gift, which is a 6” X 8” ceramic tile that hangs from a beautiful ribbon, and features all of the essential information: baby’s name, birth weight, length, date of birth and time of birth. I just loved it, not only because it made a sweet addition to my nursery, but because I cherished the fact that it was a true keepsake that I could give to Sebastien when he grew up and that he could pass along to his children, as well. In this day and age when it seems that we have all become slightly addicted to shopping at the mass merchandisers for the low cost and convenience, this sort of lasting and unique treasure has become even more special.

Jamie’s Painting & Design covers all of the bases with their line of personalized art. Looking for the perfect new baby gift…the Birth Certificate Plaque is a huge hit and there are even great options for adopted babies and twins. Personalize your child’s room with Name Tiles – available in every theme imaginable, from nautical, sports or safari to flowers and butterflies. If you have a really long name to spell out or need some fun door décor, go for a Name Plaque . Not only are all of these options adorable, they are also affordable. Since we’re all watching our money a little closer these days, it’s nice to know that you can find top of the line art for children that won’t break the bank.

I am so excited to share Jamie’s interview with you. Jamie is not only an incredible talent in our industry, but she is a great mom, saavy business woman, and an all around FUN person with a great sense of humor. I have enjoyed getting to know her and I know you will to.

Susie Fougerousse

How would you define the Jamie’s Painting & Design artwork style? My artwork style is probably best defined as whimsical and bright. I tend to use classical images in my work, yet I also enjoy using new and fresh images that others may not actually think of as children’s artwork. I have always created cartoons, I think my background in animation comes out in my art.

What inspired you to become an artist and start a business? I was an artist from the time I was able to pick up a crayon. For punishment my mother would take my art supplies away – I was always drawing and sketching as a child. Starting Jamie’s Painting & Design came out of a need for theme based letters for my daughter’s room when she was born. I made the prototype for her room using 4 x 4 ceramic tiles and painted letters on them. I never really imagined I would own a business, but it seemed like the right direction after friends and family asked for me to create name tiles for their children.

Why did you choose to design for children’s rooms? I have a passion for children’s products, I enjoy the colors, the light and happy feeling. A child’s room should be a happy place for them, a safe haven. I find parents want to create special, theme based rooms for their children – I feel my products compliment most every theme out on the market.

What is your favorite part of your daily work … when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding? Being able to see a product go from inception to completion, to being purchased by an excited parent, or friend. When I get a thank you from a customer – I love that they love my products. Better yet is when a child tells me how much they love my product – it makes me feel good that they have a little piece of my art in their room.

Do you have any advice for other working moms? Get help! It sounds corny and so simple – but you need to get help. Whatever it is you can not do, or do not want to do – get help. I got a cleaning lady when I started the business, and soon we had to get a Gardner because my husband was helping so much in the early years. We slowly added a sitter, and then employees. I meet so many working mother’s that do not get help and think they can do it all. The truth is no one can do it all, not well anyways.

If you had to pick a favorite design from your collection, what would it be? The one that comes to mind is my Pirate Name Plaque, I loved it right after I created it. Even after being on the market for a few years, it still sells quite well. Sometimes I am lucky and a design clicks with people. For whatever reason I think I got the Pirate Name Plaque right.

What sets the Jamie’s Painting & Design artwork collection apart from other children’s art? First of all our art is on ceramic tile – most of our competition is on canvas or wood painted letters. Second our products are not hand painted – they are my hand painted designs though. Our products will last forever, the art will not fade since it is not painted. For whatever reason the style I have developed has not been copied, after six years in business we have had designs copied but not my style. I think it stands out because of my cartoon like style is hard to copy – it is very distinct and so clearly a JPD product – don’t quote me though, maybe I am just lucky :) .

Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming designs or introductions to your line? Hmmm, news well we have exclusive designs for Rosenberry Rooms coming out this Spring. A very exciting product that I have been trying to bring to market for years. Our new line of “products” will be for children, to eat off of and we will be able to turn them around in a week – I don’t want to give anything else away. Second we do have some exciting Photo Tiles that should be out very soon – it is unlike anything we have seen on the market and our initial testing has been great! Of course Rosenberry Rooms will get the photos as soon as we have them!
