Meet Karen Capp of Oopsy Daisy Fine Art for Kids

The reasons why the Oopsy Daisy Fine Art For Kids brand has become a household name are almost too countless to name. With well over a thousand unique pieces of art from 55 accomplished artists, and a broad product offering extending beyond the giclee print on canvas, including clocks, lighting, rugs, growth charts, placemats, jewelry and clothing, Oopsy Daisy Fine Art For Kids is widely known as the leading manufacturer of children’s artwork today. Last, but certainly not least, the fundamental reason why Oopsy Daisy is the most prominent presence in the children’s art industry is due to the talents of its owner and founder, Karen Capp.

Karen Capp and her husband Tom founded Oopsy Daisy back in 1999. While searching for artwork for their own children’s rooms, they discovered a huge void in the marketplace for fine art for kids. One of Karen’s goals, along with providing beautiful and inspiring artwork, is to instill an appreciation of art in children at an early age. For this reason, Oopsy Daisy includes a brief biography of each artist along with every painting. As a company, they have evolved over the years to offer so many complementary products making decorating a cinch. If you just adore a particular painting, you can now find the matching lamp and nightlight, or rug etc. In addition, most paintings are part of a larger collection so that you can easily pull together the whole look. Depending on space, you can buy just one or two paintings or you can opt to buy as many as ten and hang them in groupings. A few great examples of some of these vast collections are the incredible animal paintings by Meghann O’Hara (it’s almost impossible to buy just one because they are all so darn cute) and the vintage sports series by Aaron Christensen.

I distinctly remember the first time I saw the Oopsy Daisy collection in person, and the sheer glee that I felt as I stared at each painting. Never before had I been so enthralled by children’s artwork and I actually felt a little star struck when I met Karen, the genius behind it all! Even now, years later, every time Karen introduces pieces from new and existing artists, I get a tingle in my toes from the excitement. I find myself thinking, I MUST find a place in my house to put some of this new art! Since I have already covered every bit of wall space in each of my kids’ rooms, I need to live vicariously through our customers as they purchase the new designs.

Something that most people don’t know about Karen, is that she is not only bringing together all of these incredible artists and compiling their work into a collection, but she is a very integral part of the creative process that goes into making each painting. She is choosing colors, suggesting themes, concepts and ideas and really is the driving force behind the designs in most cases. She has such a keen sense of what it takes to make an inspiring and appealing piece of children’s art, and a true understanding for what parents and children are looking for.

When I was decorating my children’s rooms, I had such fun searching through each artist’s collection and finding just the right pieces to suit their personalities. I loved seeing their reactions as we hung the artwork, and continue to enjoy seeing them discover new elements in each painting.

Day at the Bay Canvas Reproduction by Jill McDonald and Our World Mural Banner by Donna Ingemanson hang in my three year old Sebastien’s room. Sebastien loves to point out the various animals on his map, and we usually end up having a brief conversation about them before his afternoon nap.

My seven year old daughter Genevieve is a vivacious child with an incredible imagination. She loves to draw pictures and dream up fantastic stories. For her I chose many bright and colorful pieces from Jill McDonald’s fairy series. When she was three we bought her the Once Upon A Time Canvas Reproduction and it was a great source of fun for her every night to talk about what all of the fairies were doing and which one she happened to like best that day. Later, we added the Fairy Triptych made up of Morning Fairies Canvas Reproduction, Afternoon Fairies Canvas Reproduction and Nighttime Fairies Canvas Reproduction which provide even more entertainment for Genevieve.

I let Gabrielle, who is eleven, choose her favorite pieces when we transitioned to a more mature room design last year. She loves blue and chose several paintings by Gail Kaseguma. We hung Flower Tree, Gumball Tree, Orange Tree and Butterfly Tree all in a row on one wall and the lager Spring Jazz Panoramic Canvas Reproduction on the other. I love that the colors are both soothing and vibrant at the same time, and the designs are playful and sweet.

I am now in the process of finishing Cosette’s nursery. She is approaching three months, and I have been dragging my feet because I almost can’t bare to choose between all of the amazing options in the Oopsy Daisy collection. I have a case of designer’s block and may have to solicit Karen’s expert help with this!

I have long been in awe of Karen Capp and totally in love with the Oopsy Daisy Fine Art For Kids collection, so I am thrilled to be sharing this personal interview with you today. Karen gives 110% in all that she does and it is that effort mixed with a wonderful natural talent that makes Oopsy Daisy one of a kind.

Sincerely,
Susie Fougerousse

What inspired you to start a children’s art business?
karen-capp4
Like many owners of kid related businesses, our first child was our inspiration! While decorating his nursery, my husband and I found we couldn’t find art that seemed more current and pertinent. We wanted fresh and fun, but with a real art feel. Tom (my husband) comes from a family of artists and his mother was our first artist. We started this business together (and yes, we still love working together) and at our first trade show in Atlanta we featured just three artists. Now, ten years later, our business family has grown to encompass more than 80 artists, all with different styles, yet each shares a sense of play and color that makes our line feel cohesive and unified.

Oopsy Daisy carries such a wonderful assortment of art from many different artists. How would you describe the Oopsy Daisy style philosophy?
We look for art that will engage the child, and at the same time art that will flow with the design style of the rest of the home. We live in Southern California where home prices tend to be astronomical, so homes are small and we wanted our kids’ rooms to be tasteful in the same way that our family room or living room was. We really believe that children respond to interesting, well-crafted artwork and color choices. Both my son and daughter interacted with the art we hung on their walls, with no prompting from us. When she was four, she made up names for all the fairies in Jill McDonald’s “Forest Fairies” and made me repeat them correctly each night at bedtime so that kind of backfired on me when I was tired and couldn’t remember…

Also, it is important that an artist put something of themselves and their soul into a piece- that is what makes it special and significant. When Jennifer Mercede started to work on “Together- Animal Kingdom”, I told her to have fun with it. She puts text in many of her pieces and if you look closely at the piece, one of the lines says “have fun! She instructed.” When you look at that incredible piece of wild animals and crazy color, you know Jennifer had a fabulous time with her brush and her paints!

We know you have great taste in artwork. Does this come from an educational background in art? Are you artistic?
I am not an artist but I have (if I do say so myself) a definite sense of color and what works for us. Some of the artists I work with have paid me a great compliment in saying that they find me a very good art director. I don’t have an educational background in art- in fact, before starting Oopsy daisy, Fine Art For Kids, I worked in television news as a reporter/anchor. Go figure… you just never know where life will take you. My mother instilled in my sister and me, a great appreciation for the arts and we grew up going to museums, theater and traveling a lot too as we lived overseas most of our childhood. I like to think that some of that global interest, in cultures and art styles, is reflected in our line too.

What is your favorite part of your daily work … when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding? Every time a new piece of art is finished, it’s like Christmas for me. I really love working with our artists from the beginning on the concept, colors and sketches- then seeing their final magic. I have to say too, when I am in our studio facility and I see personalized artwork lined up, getting ready for packing and shipping, I can see all the bedrooms the paintings are heading to. Knowing our pieces end up in real kids’ spaces all over the world is a big reward. One time we were house hunting and we went into a home with our realtor and there in the nursery was “Animal Alphabet” by one of our long-time artists, Maria Carluccio. It made us giggle- we sometimes can’t believe we started something from our garage that has now become so much bigger than just ourselves. We are particularly proud of producing the vast majority of our products in the USA. We now employ 35 people in our San Diego facilities and it is important to us as parents and Americans that we are creating opportunity in our country.

Do you have any advice for other working moms?
Well, help your friends whenever you can and they will help you. I couldn’t achieve any kind of balance in my life if it weren’t for my neighborhood friends and our efforts to carpool and schedule together. It is really hard to say “take time for yourself” because that really feels unachievable some days, so just do the best you can. I also think it always helps to remind yourself, “is this a big problem or a little problem” and just focus on tackling one thing at a time. I am constantly reprioritizing my list so I feel like I have a handle on things.

If you had to pick a favorite piece from the Oopsy Daisy collection, what would it be?
I can’t pick between my children, our artists or our artwork. Way too many things to love about all of them!

What sets the Oopsy Daisy art collection apart from other children’s art?
I would have to say both the breadth and depth of our line- we have more than eighty artists and some of those artists have 30 or more pieces in their collection so the options are just huge. At the same time, quality, quality, quality. Our artists are professionals and their education and experience show in the pieces they create for us. Customer service is another thing that we really care about- will this piece of artwork match your fabric, did the gift arrive in time for the birthday. Our service team cares a lot and I believe it shows. Lastly, joy! When people come into our trade show booth and see all the art together, it is a happy place- just like what you would want for your child’s room.

Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming designs or introductions to your line?
We never stop introducing new pieces- this week in fact we are releasing more than 60 new pieces of artwork to the line. We also very recently introduced table top lamps with decorative art shades and pull charms, wool rugs, jewelry for girls, canvas clocks and infant pant & tee sets. Whew, that was a busy 6 months! We are also introducing new gift packaging for our night lights this April, with gift packaging for growth charts and jewelry to follow.

Now…Just for Fun

Favorite Food Mexican food or chocolate cake!

Favorite TV Show Brothers and Sisters, although sadly I haven’t watched in a while

Favorite Movie I really thought “Slumdog Millionaire” was amazing but I have to admit I normally go for the more “feel good” choices. I can never get enough of a good laugh and “RV” with Robin Williams makes me laugh every time we watch it.

Favorite Weekend Activity Sailing or just relaxing with family and friends

Favorite Band Favorite Band Don’t laugh- I’m a closet rocker. I have classic rock on my iPod like “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Paradise City” but I also really like country- Dixie Chicks, Carrie Underwood and Rascal Flatts.

If I Only Had A Baby Sling…

I have been dealing with a very sick 10 month old for the past few days. My typically happy and laughing daughter suddenly turned into a feverish mess. Oh she still tried so hard to be happy and play, but just didn’t have it in her. I had to hold her all day, every day. She wouldn’t go to my husband who she normally loves to be held by…it was just mommy who would do. Plus, I couldn’t sit with her either, she needed me to hold her and be standing all the while. The only issue with this whole thing is that it didn’t leave me much room for anything to get taken care of. Finally today I was able to put her down for a few moments here and there so that I could get some necessary things done. I think it was day two of this all-day-holding-pattern that got me thinking about slings and baby carriers. I tried to figure out where my Baby Bjorn was…but it is still tucked away in a box in one of our closets. Plus, it really isn’t the most convenient carrier to use around the house. So, instead I “window shopped” online and found myself drooling over the amazing selection of baby slings, all the while wondering why I still don’t have one. So many incredible styles, patterns, fabrics and unique “extras”…and wow, could I use one! So here I sit, typing a few days later. The Baby Bjorn is still packed away and my sweet little girl is napping peacefully. But I still don’t own a much needed, very cool, and fashionably appealing baby sling. So, I decided to take this opportunity to let others know all of the different hip and current baby slings that are available to on the market. I hope that it will help you find the perfect one for yourself or for a friend or family member – just think what a great gift this would be for new parents!

1. Rockin’ Baby Slings

I love this line of baby slings and was initially intrigued by the great colors and patterns that they use. Then, I noticed the thing that really makes them stand out from the others: the tail. Since each of their baby slings is made from 5 yards of fabric, after it is fitted properly for baby, there will be a significant amount of “leftover” fabric that drapes down (the tail). This extra fabric can be used to shade baby from the sun, or to provide a cover for nursing. I think it is pure genius. Rockin’ Baby Slings can be worn in 5 different carrying positions and can hold up to 40 lbs (that means baby-apx 3 years old!) There is no need to worry about baby growing too large to soon – this sling will definitely get lots of use. Here are some of my favorites:

Everything is Gonna Be Alright
Somebody to Love
Give Peace a Chance

2. Peanut Shell
The great thing about this particular line of slings is that they offer you multiple sizes so that you can find the one that fits you just right. No need to adjust anything or worry about zippers or loops – simple and sleek. They also come is great colors that any mom would love to wear and are nice and compact – easy to take along with you anywhere. They will hold up to 35 lbs – giving them years of use as well. They offer some different fabric options which are all machine washable…so nice! The unique features include leg padding for baby, small pocket for essentials and a hook for attaching toys. Some of the top sellers in this line are:

Red Yoko Reversible
Squirt Micro Fleece Sling
Pink Spring Baby Sling

3. JJ Cole Collections
JJ Cole has a long list of products that are created to help make life simpler for moms and dads, and their PreMaxx sling is no exception. It is made to be worn as a sling initially and then converts to a hip hammock from 5 – 18 mos. It can adjust to fit both mom and dad and has plenty of compartments to carry your cell phone, wallet, diaper and wipes and a little more…basically it is diaper bag meets sling. One of the benefits of the PreMaxx is that it coordinates with the other amazing products that JJ Cole offers parents. So, you can have a collection of baby gear and essentials that all matches while making your life that much easier. Check out the popular color combinations they offer:

PreMaxx Sling

You can check out all of these lines and more on RosenberryRooms.com under their baby carrier and sling section. Just make sure you put a baby sling on your list of “must haves” because you definitely don’t want to be stuck at home without one when you truly need it most – like me!

Small, Compact and Just Right…

As a mom of two girls under the age of 3, I have come to realize that to find a product which can simplify my life (in any way) is like finding the proverbial “pot of gold”. I will also admit that I spend many hours (probably days) thinking up ways to perfect everything from baby clothing to car seat buckles to diaper bags and toy boxes…the list goes on. In the end all I end up doing is marveling at the inventiveness of others and enjoying how they have simplified, streamlined, or actually perfected the many products that moms and dads depend on every single day. Let’s focus on a specific item to prove my point: diaper bags.

Now, I am lucky enough that when I had my first baby, the market was saturated with truly amazing options for diaper bags. Endless possibilities for the expectant mom and dad – every style, color, and fabric was available. Buying a diaper bag was much like buying a purse…there was no need for me to just “settle” for a bag. I was able to think of what style I preferred, how big or compact, what colors I liked and what features I had to have. Okay, maybe it was more like buying a car. Either way, while looking for my own diaper bag, I found it interesting how many people (family, friends and even customers slightly older than myself) would tell me horror stories of how little they had available to them. Diaper Bags made from some awful material with pastel-colored schemes of ABC block patterns, rocking horses, or the word “baby” printed all over it…you get the idea. Definitely not the types of bags that would uplift a new mommy’s spirits or make her feel chic and stylish. Lets face it – any mom knows that living amidst the smells of spit up and poopy diapers while being exhausted beyond belief, all mixed with the feeling of being not-all-that-attractive just begs for baby products that will brighten our days, put a little spring in our step, and bring back our sense of being a woman. I am not suggesting that our very babies themselves don’t give us true happiness and ultimate satisfaction, and I do not mean that we NEED these products to find our sense of self…but they sure do help!

So, after listening to many bizarre tales of “back in the day” (I was waiting for someone to throw in: “and we used to walk barefoot through the snow in the middle of winter to the schoolhouse just for a few hours of lessons…”), I started to pay more attention to baby products, especially diaper bags. I became intrigued with every new designer that we started to carry and every new style that came out. What makes them different? What makes this bag special? What does this line offer that the others lack? Many times I would think that there was no way any more improvements could be made, but I would be proved wrong: wipeable and stain-resistant fabrics, a bottom that unzips so you can let out all the crumbs, wrappers and other junk that makes its way down to the bottom of your diaper bag, convertible stroller straps, anti-microbial fabric, etc. I saw diaper bags and totes get bigger and better and more functional and exciting month by month. Now, I notice yet another trend, this time towards compact, on-the-go, all-in-one mini diaper stations. This movement towards minimalism is right up my alley. I have the large, multi-compartment diaper bag that fits everything and just a bit more that we may need for a day or weekend away, but what about the quick trips to the store for milk and wipes. (Personally, I feel like I am always running to the store for milk and wipes.) What about just running a bunch of errands? Meeting up at a friend’s house for a few hours? Surely I still need my large diaper bag. Right? Maybe? Hmmm…

Truth be told, after our second daughter was born, I found myself trying to shove the least amount of things I needed under my arm or in her car seat, so that I didn’t have to bring along anything “extra”. Car seat hanging on my right arm…Left hand holding my toddler so she doesn’t run away…fumbling with keys, probably a few grocery bags, mail, phone…doesn’t leave much room for my big diaper bag. Maybe for some moms and dads, the more kids they have, the larger the bag they need. For me, it is the more kids, the more compact and economical I want things to be. I also realize now that I don’t need 5 diapers per child per hour. I also don’t need two changes of clothing, every medication I can think of, etc. Basically, I don’t have to bring my house with me every place I go. So, these smaller, simpler, “just the essentials” types of diaper bags really make me smile. They are something that I should have thought of…some that I did think of (too late, of course…because I was busy lugging around my large, large bag all over town), and some that I still think “wow, that is just awesome”. So hooray for moms and dads everywhere who don’t have to long for something better…we just get to choose our perfect color, size, shape and must haves. Because, trust me, your bag is out there.

Here are some of the top sellers of compact and on-the-go diaper bags, plus a few of my favorites as well. I hope this sparks your interest as much as mine and gives you yet another way to simplify your daily life as a mom or dad. Have fun, and check out all the other diaper bags and totes on RosenberryRooms.com.

Meet Jamie Lentzner of Jamie’s Painting & Design

I used to think I was a seasoned multi-tasker, until I met Jamie Lentzner (the Jamie from Jamie’s Painting & Design). I was particularly proud of my multi tasking skills a few weeks ago when I sat on the couch nursing my newborn baby in my lap, while feeding a hot dog to my 3 year old son (seated to my left) and helping my 11 year old (seated to my right) with her home work assignment by researching the civil war on my laptop, while simultaneously exchanging instant messages with my office manager. At that moment my head swelled a little and I thought “darn I’m good”. Well, I can safely say that my abilities pale in comparison to those of Jamie Lentzner. When Jamie isn’t involved in some sort of charitable function, volunteering at her children’s school by taking on a huge art project, running her business, taking care of her kids or blogging, she is designing and creating more and more and even more designs for her ever popular line of children’s art.

Aside from the fact that Jamie is super talented and has a knack for creating children’s artwork that really strikes a chord with our customers, the sheer depth and breadth of the Jamie’s Painting & Design collection is enough to garner anyone’s respect. Jamie has managed to cover every hot color scheme and every popular children’s theme in the most sought after children’s products: birth certificate plaques, personalized name plaques, initial tiles, personalized plates and Christmas ornaments. What really sets Jamie’s products apart from those of other artists is her unique drawing style along with the medium she has chosen for her artwork. Jamie’s Painting & Design specializes in artwork on a tile surface, which is brilliant because the artwork can never fade, always maintains its beautiful glossy surface and best of all it can easily be stored and then passed down from generation to generation.

Three years ago when I gave birth to my son Sebastien, Jamie sent me one of her signature Birth Certificate Plaques as a gift, which is a 6” X 8” ceramic tile that hangs from a beautiful ribbon, and features all of the essential information: baby’s name, birth weight, length, date of birth and time of birth. I just loved it, not only because it made a sweet addition to my nursery, but because I cherished the fact that it was a true keepsake that I could give to Sebastien when he grew up and that he could pass along to his children, as well. In this day and age when it seems that we have all become slightly addicted to shopping at the mass merchandisers for the low cost and convenience, this sort of lasting and unique treasure has become even more special.

Jamie’s Painting & Design covers all of the bases with their line of personalized art. Looking for the perfect new baby gift…the Birth Certificate Plaque is a huge hit and there are even great options for adopted babies and twins. Personalize your child’s room with Name Tiles – available in every theme imaginable, from nautical, sports or safari to flowers and butterflies. If you have a really long name to spell out or need some fun door décor, go for a Name Plaque . Not only are all of these options adorable, they are also affordable. Since we’re all watching our money a little closer these days, it’s nice to know that you can find top of the line art for children that won’t break the bank.

I am so excited to share Jamie’s interview with you. Jamie is not only an incredible talent in our industry, but she is a great mom, saavy business woman, and an all around FUN person with a great sense of humor. I have enjoyed getting to know her and I know you will to.

Susie Fougerousse

How would you define the Jamie’s Painting & Design artwork style? My artwork style is probably best defined as whimsical and bright. I tend to use classical images in my work, yet I also enjoy using new and fresh images that others may not actually think of as children’s artwork. I have always created cartoons, I think my background in animation comes out in my art.

What inspired you to become an artist and start a business? I was an artist from the time I was able to pick up a crayon. For punishment my mother would take my art supplies away – I was always drawing and sketching as a child. Starting Jamie’s Painting & Design came out of a need for theme based letters for my daughter’s room when she was born. I made the prototype for her room using 4 x 4 ceramic tiles and painted letters on them. I never really imagined I would own a business, but it seemed like the right direction after friends and family asked for me to create name tiles for their children.

Why did you choose to design for children’s rooms? I have a passion for children’s products, I enjoy the colors, the light and happy feeling. A child’s room should be a happy place for them, a safe haven. I find parents want to create special, theme based rooms for their children – I feel my products compliment most every theme out on the market.

What is your favorite part of your daily work … when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding? Being able to see a product go from inception to completion, to being purchased by an excited parent, or friend. When I get a thank you from a customer – I love that they love my products. Better yet is when a child tells me how much they love my product – it makes me feel good that they have a little piece of my art in their room.

Do you have any advice for other working moms? Get help! It sounds corny and so simple – but you need to get help. Whatever it is you can not do, or do not want to do – get help. I got a cleaning lady when I started the business, and soon we had to get a Gardner because my husband was helping so much in the early years. We slowly added a sitter, and then employees. I meet so many working mother’s that do not get help and think they can do it all. The truth is no one can do it all, not well anyways.

If you had to pick a favorite design from your collection, what would it be? The one that comes to mind is my Pirate Name Plaque, I loved it right after I created it. Even after being on the market for a few years, it still sells quite well. Sometimes I am lucky and a design clicks with people. For whatever reason I think I got the Pirate Name Plaque right.

What sets the Jamie’s Painting & Design artwork collection apart from other children’s art? First of all our art is on ceramic tile – most of our competition is on canvas or wood painted letters. Second our products are not hand painted – they are my hand painted designs though. Our products will last forever, the art will not fade since it is not painted. For whatever reason the style I have developed has not been copied, after six years in business we have had designs copied but not my style. I think it stands out because of my cartoon like style is hard to copy – it is very distinct and so clearly a JPD product – don’t quote me though, maybe I am just lucky :) .

Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming designs or introductions to your line? Hmmm, news well we have exclusive designs for Rosenberry Rooms coming out this Spring. A very exciting product that I have been trying to bring to market for years. Our new line of “products” will be for children, to eat off of and we will be able to turn them around in a week – I don’t want to give anything else away. Second we do have some exciting Photo Tiles that should be out very soon – it is unlike anything we have seen on the market and our initial testing has been great! Of course Rosenberry Rooms will get the photos as soon as we have them!

The Colors of Spring

If you’re like me this time of year, suddenly there is a little more bounce in your step and you can’t stop thinking … Spring is here!! This is the perfect opportunity to refresh your little one’s space with a couple of cute throw pillows or perhaps the perfect children’s bedding collection for the finishing touch to renew and refresh their style. You don’t always have to completely redecorate to bring new life to your space… and seriously, who has the time?! Bringing in small kid’s decorative items that make you feel revived is just as effective.

Now, onto what I truly love… COLOR. Color is the most ingenious way to directly affect our sub-conscious or ‘inner’ nature….and this Spring make no mistake about it, color is truly reborn. I would classify the decorating style of Spring 2009 as solid but serene. It is a season of romance and fairytales with touches of the exotic sprinkled with butterflies and gems for an overall sophisticated look. In saying this, don’t think that this season is just for the girls. There are countless ways to freshen up a boy’s room by balancing light and airy fabrics… such as soft cotton or sheers with more solid materials, such as denim. Don’t be afraid to add a little fringe for a touch of whimsy and class.

Focusing on color, think diffused, pale and faded, really playing into the romantic essence of the look. Featured colors this season for kid’s room decor and accessories are yellow, blush, blue, lavender, dusty beige and gray neutrals … with a slightly muted attribute. Starting with yellow, focus more on subtle tones….think Canary, Amber Sun, Soft Butter, Tangerine Yellow, Golden Cornbread and Slate Yellow

For a BIG impact go for Serena & Lily’s Isabel Bedding Collection with all the matching accessories, including a Personalized Letter Pillow to add a bit of charm. This set is purely emblematic of what this season has in store for your children’s spaces!

For the perfect combo, pair this with the Ooh La La White Rug from The Rug Market, a Rosenberry Rooms top rug designer, to highlight the romantic element of your space.

Why stop there… for a touch of the exotic try combining with the Tiger Boo Pink Rug, a favorite of mine, featuring soft lines and blush tones, also a choice color for Spring.

Inspiring Idea: For something a little different, break up your child’s space by separating it into two more focused areas… a zone for sleeping and one for playing, reading or wherever their imagination may take them. Then ground each zone with an area rug. This is a fast, cost effective way to rejuvenate your child’s room, bedroom or playroom.

Looking for a modern retro meets masculine look? You have just stumbled upon a gem; like me you will find yourself lovestruck over DwellStudio’s Transportation Bedding Set. Along with so many coordinating accessories for bedroom, bathroom and on the go; you can take this contemporary look with you everywhere!

or for something a bit more subtle go with Serena & Lily’s Cole Bedding Collection!

Which brings me to blue. Beautiful blue. I love this color, not only because it is so versatile and gender friendly but also because of its exhilarating quality. This season go for denim or a lighter, sky infused blue or blue lavender.
Think stormy sky, palace blue, pacific blue, Prussian Blue
For boys, I adore the Choo Choo Chandelier in Satin Nickel. The polished look and creative concept makes this children’s ceiling fixture irreplaceable!

One of Rosenberry Rooms sweetest lighting accessories is the Blue Starburst Chandelier Shade embellished with exquisite embroidery and finished with a delicate beaded trim…. perfectly set atop a pair of Rosenberry Rooms White Double Lily Sconces handcrafted by Maura Daniel Studio in Los Angeles. The elegant petals and touches of pearl bring a flawless and timeless look, making this the perfect blue duo for this Spring!

Bring in dusty neutrals and beiges but, think outside the space. No pun intended!
Picture your little one rollin’ down the sidewalk in the Vintage Green or Vintage Pink Pedal Estate Wagon…. LOVE IT! Take your child out for a spin in a pedal car; it’s the perfect opportunity to take a cool spring walk with the family.

Not only are these pedal cars classy, they are very vintage, very retro….. American Retro that is; they are the masterminds behind these little inventions. With a variety of shapes and colors who wouldn’t adore them!
If you have a little flyer my top pick is American Retro’s Limited Edition All Chrome Pedal Airplane. Inspired by the 1941 Steelcraft U.S. Army Patrol Plane it is practically irresistible!

With almost 40 Pedal Cars & Tricycles to choose from you’re sure to find something to suit your little one!

A Room Full of New Arrivals (Inc, that is)

How great is it when as a parent you are able to find everything for your child’s room in one place? New Arrivals, Inc has accomplished that, making it oh so simple to pull together your little girl’s or boy’s nursery or bedroom. They have covered everything from the essential bedding pieces to coordinating table clocks, picture frames, wastebaskets, book holders, wooden hanging wall letters, and even memo boards. Let’s take a closer look at this whimsical line of childrens décor to see what makes it so special.

Old is New Again
New Arrivals bedding, décor and gifts are a modern take on things of old. Many of their cradle and bedding sets (Sock Monkey, Flea Market, Retro Cowboy) remind me of something that my Nona would have safely tucked away in her attic just waiting for the day it could be brought back to life in her great grandchild’s bedroom. Tori Swaim, the owner and creative mind behind New Arrivals Inc, has the ability to design custom made children’s bedding that looks as if it has many stories to tell from times gone by. Vintage inspired designs combined with soft, washable fabrics create nostalgic pieces that are practical as well. Their kids décor is no exception – small details like distressing, using an antique white color instead of a bright white, and scalloped edges for shelves, frames and mirrors, all come together to create heirloom-style children’s furnishings. Put all these elements together and you suddenly have a child’s room or nursery that is timeless and unique.

YES! It All Matches
New Arrivals, Inc. takes the guesswork out of matching your child’s room décor. They have a simple yet versatile color palette of soft blues, pinks, yellows and greens that coordinate perfectly with all of their bedding. Recent additions to their line have been the ever popular chocolate/blue & chocolate/pink combinations, which are a bit more modern and trendy, while still maintaining the overall vintage feel of New Arrivals décor. All you have to do is decide which color is best, and they take care of providing the “whole room” look. The best part is that if you choose to add to your room décor at a later date, you know it will coordinate perfectly with your existing pieces!

You Can Add and Create
Beyond all of their great bedding collections, which range from cradle and crib to twin sets, all of their designer fabrics are available to purchase by the yard. Maybe you love one of their bedding sets but you would like to pull the accent fabric out just a bit more – you can create a window seat cushion, a floor pillow or even a throw…these are all great ways to add your personal and touch by using their fabric by the yard. Since all of their bedding is custom made, they also will allow you to customize any of their sets, or even create one with your own choice of fabrics – how personal and unique!

Check out the entire New Arrivals, Inc. collection on RosenberryRooms.com and you are sure to be inspired by their fabrics, colors, and signature designs. Here are some customer favorites for a sneak peek at this fabulous line of kids bedding and room décor:

Special Feature Pick of the Week – Heroes Canvas Reproduction by Olive Kids

Heroes Canvas Reproduction by Olive Kids

If you have a boy, you may know that finding quality, fun and ‘boyish’ childrens art for his bedroom is a tough choice. There does seem to be more choices for the girls with pinks and flowers and butterflies, but there are many great boys bedroom decor options, too. And, believe it or not, boys are often much more particular about the decor in their bedroom than the girls! I know because I have one of each and my boy is much more insistent on his preference of artwork than my daughter. He is all boy and only wants boy things. That’s why this Heroes Canvas is my pick of the week. My son loves it. It is colorful and fun enough for his bedroom, but also ‘manly’ enough for his growing boy tastes.

In addition to the brilliant colors and fun design, my son adores that this piece is personalized just for him. He loves to read over his name each night. This piece is also easy to hang (another mom-favorite aspect!) with saw tooth hanger, no framing necessary.

Love it!

Little Bunny Blue – Meet Designer Michelle Henry

Michelle Henry, designer extraordinaire, is the genius behind the luxurious line of children’s linens called Little Bunny Blue. If you have had the pleasure of perusing the Little Bunny Blue designer line, or better yet, owning one of Michelle Henry’s bedding designs, then you are well aware that this is not just any ol’ bedding collection. Michelle is an artist through and through. She is always imagining, designing and sketching ideas for new bedding sets, faster than she can produce them. Using textiles as her medium, her bedding designs are akin to a fine art collection. I find myself staring at the photographs of her finished rooms with a sense of awe, just taking in all of the details from the trim work to each elaborate pillow, skirt and bumper design. However exquisite, don’t be fooled into thinking that they belong on display behind glass, as they really are designed with children in mind. Michelle is meticulous with her fabric choices, making sure all are not only soft enough but durable enough to endure the wear and tear that comes with babies and toddlers.

On a personal level, Michelle and I have grown to be good friends over the last few years of working together. We both belong to the “crazy working mother of 4 club”, we both love anything and everything to do with children’s room design, and we share the habit of working (very) late into the night, which has led to endless midnight conversations over instant messenger. It feels like I have company when most every night as I sit working on my computer, in my own world, I see that Michelle is online as well. Sometimes we just share a brief “hello”, and other times, we end up chatting for the rest of the night. I love the fact that Michelle is as down to earth and grounded as she is elegant and sophisticated.

As you read through Michelle Henry’s interview, it is easy to see that she has a huge heart, a great sense of humor and an impeccable sense of style, which I believe is all part of the secret recipe that makes a remarkable designer.

What inspired you to become a designer and start a business?

My Mother—– what can I say she adopted me at 3 days old. She would tell me that she told her doctor she wanted a child with blonde curly hair that could sing and dance!!! So funny I just happen to have those qualities and I thought I had them because she “knew” ahead of time!!! I really believed her. She told me I was special everyday, and that I was wanted. I grew up with what most misinterpret as ego but I was actually pretty confident & spoiled. I felt guilty a lot of times for that, hence I became the ultimate people pleaser. I have had to learn that everyone has something special about them and no one should feel guilty for that. I still stumble all over the place most of the time. I am very hard on myself. My parents have been self employed since I was a child. They had a restaraunt, sold crafts, my Mother sewed for people and actually ironed for people at the age of 9 to buy her own clothes. My father, the baby of 12 had to grow up very young and my Mother did everything in her power to make sure that I had the life and love that she always wanted. Finally my Mom created her own clothing line and together she and my Dad created a very successful business. Currently, they are supposed to be retired. I did hear Oprah say once, “people with projects stay younger” so that would sum them up in a nut shell. If you are wondering why I am talking about my parents so much, well, they are my inspiration and they always will be. My mother has always been able to bring my imagination to life. She is one of the most talented people I have ever met. I do push her though. She will say ” Michelle, that can’t be done or I just can’t do that” and I will say, “well somebody can and since I have seen it done then you can do it!” I don’t like to be told “No” and once I have a vision there is no stopping me. I can’t leave out my Grandmother though. She had incredible taste. She was so classy and beautiful and came from nothing. She introduced me to Gucci at 10 years old and took me shopping with her at very expensive stores and boutiques. She told me that her father sold moonshine to Bonnie and Clyde and that Bonnie had the the best clothes she had ever seen. Her mother died when she was very young so she was raised by her father. I just couldn’t leave her out of this. Her taste in clothes was always so cutting edge and she always carried herself beyond anything she grew up with. She was just one of those people you don’t forget!

Why did you choose to design for children’s rooms?

This is a pretty typical answer most likely. I was prego and at the time I owned a Day Spa. I was an esthetician for 8 years prior and everyone always said, this place is beautiful you should be a decorator. I was so bored with doing facials and I was a terrible money manager so I sold the place and started the bedding line with my parents. We got our first account with Bellini in Houston the day I was leaving the hospital with my 3rd child Drake. I did love working with the clients at the spa though. They were always very special to me.

What is your favorite part of your daily work … when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?

First, the customers I enjoy them all and I try to stay as attainable as possible. Coming up with something like Angelique is pretty neat too. I have the first sketch of that and it made me feel really great. I am getting better at drawing, photoshop, photography and designing window treatments.
Each day is just like” O.K. Michelle get this done– think of something great” JUST DO IT. My 5 year old Cole says to me all of the time, Mommy are you talking to yourself again!!!. I say YES I AM — and that is O.K.

Do you have any advice for other working moms?

Yes– Don’t do it like I do it!!! Put God First, Your Marriage and Your Children. Sounds easy right? It is very hard for me. And I will be the first to admit as great as my kids are they could be even better. I just have to pray and not procrastinate. If your not into praying YET —then you heard it hear first!!!!

If you had to pick a favorite design from your collection, what would it be?

That is so hard. I know what the best sellers are but I also know what took the longest to design and how much hard work it took to go into it. Actually, some of my favorites have never been seen because they were custom designs. But if I have to answer — anything with the scalloped bumper and the tutu skirt or trims. I know that people were doing scalloped bumpers before me but I like mine the best. The style of the Angelique is gorgeous. The Barbie, Jojo & Miss Princess are great regardless of what fabric we use. The Warren is not one of my best sellers but it is really an original set a—- a little dark for most but I still love it. I actually named it after the clients child and they were naming him after her father. I love Little Boy Blue, Andre, Harrison & Grant because they cover a wide range of styles yet they are all classic & blue & brown. Imagine That!!!! OH I LOVE COTTON TAIL and CIRQUE DE BABY & Blue Frog- I can’t leave those out. I don’t want to offend anyone. LOL
I have to say– there are plenty that I think, “What was I thinking” too. And then some that I thought– “well they will have to like this if they like Caden Lane” so I did Monkey Business and I can’t give it away. It is really cute too. I just think I have been stereo typed already. Like Jennifer Aniston in a funny love story ( dare I compare!!!) So I notice when I stretch, people are like, NO we can’t see that!!! WE DON”T WANT TO SEE THAT” That is O.K. though. As long as I have more things that do work than don’t. The Pros are outweighing the Con’s I am perfectly fine with that!!!.

What sets Little Bunny Blue apart from other children’s bedding designers?

My Mother, My Father, My Imagination, My Life Experience, My Expectations, Hard Work, Inspiration, Dedication, Creativity, Quality, My Eyes, Talented People I Know and 4 beautiful little boys that could care less about anything except my attention, yet they are my biggest fans and they are my all My Soldiers.

Do you have any news that you would like to share about upcoming designs or introductions to your line?

I have so many beds designed that I need to do it isn’t even funny- especially more boy. I think there are at least 6 boys sets that just need to be made. I love doing twins but I just can’t compete with pricing of some of the people that make everything in China and that is such a finicky age for children so I always feel bad about the price and don’t put a lot of focus into it. I do intend to though. I have the fabrics I have the vision it just needs to come to fruition.

Now…Just for Fun

Favorite Food: Seafood Enchalados from Pappsasito’s ( a popular Tex-Mex chain in Texas)

Favorite TV Show: American Idol, Dancing With The Stars towards the end. Watching all of the so-so people bores me to tears.

( I am not a huge T.V. fan but, Flippin’ Out, The Real Housewives of whichever county–(Pretty shallow right?) I had a boyfriend tell me I was shallow once– He also told me I was going to ride his coat tails the rest of his life too!!!–NOW THAT IS SUPER HILARIOUS. Oh & I like Brothers and Sisters.

Favorite Movie: Good Will Hunting and H.E.A.T.

Favorite Weekend Activity: I don’t have a favorite activity. I mean if you had asked what would a perfect week or weekend look like for me in la la land :I would answer — spending the weekend with my children doing everything and anything they wanted with a nanny, going shopping, mani, pedi, facial, lipo, the chef comes and prepares the meals for the week ahead and I got to work the entire time too that is what I would say. But I honestly can’t even answer that question because all I really do is” try to keep my head above water”.

Favorite Band: Third Day, Natalie Grant, Mercy Me, Lifehouse, Sting, Dave Matthews Band
